Poster Experiment | Lights out.

I wanted to experiment with different layouts for a poster. This idea happened accidentally originally I was just placing them consecutively next to each other, filled in the background in a darker colour which accidentally darkened all but one layer. This is when I had the idea of repeating all 3 images, and with each line one is lit individually. This reinforce the idea that when all our lights are on, there is a consequence. poster 2.jpg

Final Poster | Light Pollution

For the final poster, I wanted to combine all the animals in one image, raising the awareness/bringing stronger and emotional content. Receiving feedback from my class was really informing as it was all very positive and everyone seemed to feel it does justice to the cause and was well executed.

One comment I took on board was to experiment with the shadow of the words. Instead of having both the shadow and the type, use the shadow to spell out the words, as light is the main issue. I feel as though this does work a lot better and the typed out font was unnecessary as it’s a lot more effective with the shadow alone.

I wanted to produce something that would actually have an effect on someone, even if it is one person alone who turns off their light/reduces it. Taking on a global issue is very difficult to execute well, and I feel as though I got my point across to the audience.  posternew

Light Pollution poster series

For the ‘NightBlight’ project to decided to focus around the affect light pollution has on nature. I chose baby turtles, referncing when they hatch and follow the city lights instead of going into the sea. I also chose birds in reference to migrating birds where they go off course. Finally I chose deer as light pollution affects the way predators hunt causing higher mortality rates as prey have less natural light for their eyes to adjust, therefore can not run away. final-turtle

I hoped the posters were effective enough in order to make at least one person think before they put the light on. In the modern day we’re all about places being open 24/7 and being lit 24/7. This is having detrimental consequences on the nature of our planet. final-birddeer-final

mood-boardMy current project for university is to choose a website and create work in support of the cause. The website I have chosen is ‘CPRE NightBlight’ (check it out). Light pollution is a huge issue which can have serious environmental consequences for humans, wildlife, and our climate.

To start off the project I have created a mood board to explore certain aspects/ideas I could reflect on to create imagery. I am swaying towards the effects it has on nature such as migrating birds, hatching turtles and nocturnal animals. Plants and animals depend on Earth’s daily cycle of light and dark rhythm to govern life-sustaining behaviors such as reproduction, nourishment, sleep and protection from predators.
